The Vigilant II Coal Stove is a combination burner, able to
burn either bituminous coal (soft coal) or anthracite (hard
coal). The Vigilant II Coal stove is shipped from the fac-
tory set up to burn bituminous coal.
The stove must be modied to burn anthracite. After the
stove has been modied, a label is attached to the top
of the ash door. The label warns that there is a risk of
excessive temperature and damage to the unit and that
proper operation requires the use of only nut or pea size
anthracite coal.
Less combustion air is needed when the stove is burning
bituminous coal than when burning anthracite. The modi-
cation from bituminous to anthracite consists of remov-
ing an air restrictor plate form the lower reback. This al-
lows the correct amount of combustion air into the rebox
for efcient burnign of anthracite. Burning bituminous coal
with the restrictor plate remvoed would allow too much
combustion air into the rebox. Very high temperatures
and a hazardous condition could result.
To adapt the Vigilant II for burning anthracite, it will be
necessary to remove the restrictor plate and attach the
warning label to the top of the ash door.
Remove the Air Restrictor Plate.
The plate is installed on front left of the left reback.
A screw passing through the restrictor plate prevents the
plate from being lifted and removed from the reback.
To reach the screw it is necessary to remove some parts
of the grate system. Refer to Figure 1.
